Indus water saga: PTI submits resolution against new canals, seeks support from other parties

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has submitted a resolution to the National Assembly Secretariat against the construction of new canals from the River Indus. In a strategic move, PTI has also announced that it will seek support from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) for the resolution.

The resolution was submitted by PTI’s Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, alongside party members Zartaj Gul, Ahmed Chatha, and Ali Muhammad Khan, urging Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, to schedule the resolution for discussion.

Speaking to the media, PTI leader Zartaj Gul expressed concerns over the ongoing developments in Sindh regarding the new canals. She emphasized the growing unrest in the province and criticized the lack of a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) before taking such sensitive decisions.

Gul called for an immediate debate in the National Assembly, urging Speaker Sadiq to place the resolution on the agenda for open discussion. She further demanded that a session of the CCI be convened to address the issue.

A journalist questioned the PTI’s move to seek support from PPP, given that PTI had previously accused former President Asif Ali Zardari of selling Sindh’s water. In response, Ali Muhammad Khan, a PTI member, retorted by asking reporters to investigate why Zardari had been ill.

He pointed out that if Zardari, as the President, had chaired a meeting regarding the canals at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidential Palace), then the responsibility for selling the water should fall on him.

Khan continued, stating that had PTI been given the results of Form 45, PTI would have formed the government in Sindh as well. He reiterated that PTI stands with the people of Sindh on the issue of the canals, further highlighting the party’s position on the matter.

This development underscores the political maneuvering taking place in the run-up to discussions on the controversial canal project, with PTI rallying support from other political forces while criticizing past decisions and leadership.
