Iran has vehemently condemned the latest round of US sanctions targeting its oil industry, dismissing any possibility of negotiations with the United States.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that engaging in talks with Washington is “neither smart, wise, or honorable,” citing past broken agreements.
The sanctions, announced Thursday, are the first imposed on Iran since President Donald Trump’s return to office. They target Iranian companies, ships, and individuals involved in exporting Iranian crude oil, primarily to China.
The US aims to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero as part of its broader strategy to halt Tehran’s nuclear program.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei denounced the sanctions as “illegitimate and unlawful,” holding the US responsible for any consequences. He stated that the US action is an attempt to pressure the Iranian people by hindering legitimate trade.
While a senior Iranian official recently indicated a willingness to give the US a chance to resolve disputes, Khamenei’s statement firmly closes the door on negotiations for the foreseeable future.
He warned that any threat to Iran’s security would be met with a reciprocal threat to US security. These developments come as European powers continue diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump abandoned in 2018.
