The Punjab Assembly has approved a bill seeking a comprehensive ban on kite flying, accompanied by stringent penalties for those who violate the law.
Under the bill seeking amendments to the law, kite flying has been declared as a non-bailable offence. If the governor gives the nod, offenders would face a minimum prison sentence of three to seven years.
Fines imposed for kite flying, as well as for the selling and transportation of kites, would range from Rs500,000 to Rs5 million.
The bill also enforces a complete prohibition on the preparation of materials related to kite flying. Individuals caught flying kites might receive a prison sentence of three to five years or face a fine of Rs2 million, or both.
Kite makers and transporters could be sentenced to five to seven years in prison, with fines reaching up to Rs5 million.
Children found participating in kite flying would face a fine of Rs50,000 for their first offence and Rs100,000 for subsequent violations.
