South Africa beat Afghanistan in second super over
In a thrilling encounter, South Africa beat Afghanistan by four runs in the second super over in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
Afghanistan need 24 runs in the second super over to win their match. However, the team failed to achieve the target.
Earlier, the first super over failed to decide the match as both sides ended up on the same score.
Batting first, Afghanistan set an 18-run target for South Africa.
South Africa also scored 17 runs in their response, forcing the match to go into the second super over.
Earlier, chasing 188, the Afghanistan side was bowled out for 187 in the last over of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
After winning the toss, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan invited South Africa to bat, perhaps to extract moisture in the pitch for the morning game.
His decision appeared correct as Afghanistan’s bowlers were able to keep South African batters quiet initially.
Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed South Africa captain Aiden Markram off a slower ball that he ended up scooping to mid-off.
However, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickleton joined forces and took the game to Afghanistan.
The pair built a 116-run partnership in just 61 balls.
De Kock scored 59 runs in 41 balls, while Ryan Rickleton hit 61 in just 28 balls, with the help of five fours and four sixes.
Other players also contributed significantly. Dewald Brevis (23) and David Miller (20 not out) chipped in with cameos as South Africa finished at 187/6.
