Pakistan says Gaza role aimed at lasting peace and reconstruction
Pakistan’s decision to join the Gaza Board of Peace is aimed at supporting international efforts to establish lasting peace and reconstruction in the Palestinian territory, sources said on Thursday.
Earlier, the government announced that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accepted an invitation from US President Donald Trump to become part of the Gaza Board of Peace.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar said the decision was taken to support peace in Palestine, enhance humanitarian assistance, and contribute to the reconstruction of war-affected areas.
In a statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that Pakistan has decided to join the global Board of Peace to support the implementation of the Gaza peace plan under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.
According to the spokesperson, Pakistan hopes the framework will significantly improve humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people and enable concrete steps toward the rehabilitation and rebuilding of Gaza.
In a post on social media platform X, Ishaq Dar said that Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia and Qatar are also members of the Gaza Board of Peace.
Welcoming President Trump’s role in advancing joint peace efforts, Dar reiterated that Pakistan would continue its diplomatic support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The Foreign Office emphasised that Pakistan firmly believes a viable, sovereign and geographically contiguous Palestinian state, based on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, remains the only sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue.
The spokesperson added that as a member of the Board of Peace, Pakistan aims to play a constructive role in alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and supporting their right to self-determination.
The sources said that on the sidelines of the WEF in Davos, further consultations on peace and regional stability are expected, with representatives from multiple countries participating.
According to the sources, several countries are expected to sign a joint agreement of the Gaza Board of Peace in Davos, while a total of 59 countries —including nations outside the Middle East — have expressed interest in joining the initiative.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also welcomed the invitation to join the peace board and announced that Russia is prepared to contribute $10 million from its frozen assets to the Board of Peace, with additional funds potentially allocated for post-war reconstruction following the Ukraine conflict.
