Actor George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their twin children, Alexander and Ella, have been granted French citizenship, official government documents reveal.

A gazette notice listing all new naturalisations, released on Saturday, confirms the Clooney family among those recently granted French nationality.

Clooney, a US citizen, and Amal, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer, have long been familiar with France, where their primary residence is a farm.

They also maintain homes in England and near Clooney’s family in Kentucky.

Speaking to the New York Times in February, Clooney reflected on his choice: “Growing up in Kentucky, all I wanted was to leave the farm life.

Now I find myself back in it. I drive a tractor and all those things. It’s the best chance for a normal life.”

The actor has also expressed concerns about raising children in Hollywood.

“I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood,” he told Esquire in October.

“I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France – they kind of don’t give a sh*t about fame.

I don’t want them worrying about paparazzi or being compared to other famous kids.”

Clooney has long advocated for his family’s privacy.

In 2021, he wrote an open letter urging media outlets to refrain from publishing images of his children.

France offers strong privacy protections: it is illegal to photograph someone in a private setting or disclose personal details such as addresses or phone numbers, and publishing photos of celebrities in public is restricted unless related to their official public roles.

Litigation attorney Chassen Palmer explained in 2020 that when paparazzi attempt to photograph celebrities in France outside of official appearances, “the celebrity’s security or assistant will take a picture or video of the paparazzi,” which is then forwarded to the celebrity’s attorney.

Local media are warned that publication could result in civil damages, a practice that has largely deterred intrusive photography of public figures.
