Karachi and several areas of Balochistan experienced earthquake tremors late Monday night, triggering panic among residents in these localities.

According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake struck at 12:51am, registering a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 12 kilometres.

The epicentre was located 87 kilometres from Karachi near the Balochistan town of Sonmiani.

In Karachi, tremors were felt at I.I. Chundrigar Road, Lyari, Saddar, Clifton, PECHS and DHA, as well as SITE Area, Tipu Sultan Road, Pehalwan Goth and Bahria Town, prompting residents to rush out of their homes reciting Kalima.

The tremors also affected several areas of Balochistan, including Winder, Hub, Gadani and Sonmiani.

However, no immediate reports of casualties or major property damage were received from these areas.

Earlier, a separate earthquake of 3.2 magnitude was recorded in and around Sibi, Balochistan.

The epicentre of that quake was located 53 kilometres southwest of Sibi, according to seismic authorities.

Following the Karachi earthquake, residents of a residential building in Lyari’s Naya Abad area evacuated their homes after cracks reportedly appeared in the structure.

Police and rescue teams reached the site immediately. Rescue officials stated that initial inspections did not reveal any major structural damage, but a detailed assessment was being conducted as a precaution.

Separately, reports also emerged of cracks appearing in a residential building, Baba Arcade, located near Liaquat Colony in Lyari, spreading fear among residents.

According to Edhi officials, cracks appeared shortly after the tremors, forcing occupants to leave the building and gather in open areas.

Police, fire brigade personnel, Edhi ambulances and volunteers arrived at the scene, while rescue teams began an initial inspection.

Residents were advised to stay away from the building as a safety measure until further assessments were completed.

However, some residents of Baba Arcade disputed the claims, stating that the building had not sustained any damage and that people were continuing to live there as usual.

They claimed that rumours about the building’s condition were deliberately spread, accusing certain elements of attempting to create panic for illegal land-grabbing purposes.

Authorities said inspections were ongoing and urged citizens to rely only on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports.
