A film based on the massively popular Labubu plush doll line has entered early development at Sony, according to reports.

The Culver City studio has secured the feature rights to the Chinese designer toy.

However, no director, writer, or production team is attached yet, and it is still unclear whether the movie will be animated or live-action.

Labubu was introduced in 2015 by Hong Kong–born, Europe-based artist Kasing Lung.

Initially produced by How2Work, the line saw its global rise after Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over in 2019.

Part of Lung’s The Monsters series, the dolls draw inspiration from Nordic folklore.

What started as a cult favourite in East and Southeast Asia has since turned into a worldwide craze, with rare pieces fetching six-figure sums on the black market in the US.

Pop Mart’s “eyeless box” strategy, in which buyers don’t know which figure they’ve purchased until opening it, has made the items rare and highly sought after.

The company has indeed become more popular because celebrities like Blackpink’s Lisa have been seen wearing Labubu accessories.

Pop Mart’s 2024 report stated that the Monsters line generated $430 million, making up 23.3% of its annual revenue.

The line generated $670 million in the first half of 2025, about 35% of Pop Mart’s total revenue.
