Safe City distribution box stolen near Karachi’s Bilawal House
A distribution box installed for Safe City surveillance cameras near Bilawal House Chowrangi in Karachi has been stolen, raising concerns over the security of the project, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The DG of Safe City Authority, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, verified the theft and said that the cameras connected to the box were removed following the incident to prevent further loss.
The distribution box, which contained equipment valued at millions of rupees, had been installed to enhance surveillance and curb crime in the city.
Sheikh noted that the district police had been tasked with securing the Safe City project, and called the theft a worrying development.
Meanwhile, DIG South, Asad Raza, said that the absence of an alarm system made it impossible to determine the exact time of the theft.
Investigators are relying on eyewitness accounts and available evidence, and the surrounding CCTV footage is being examined.
He added that the box was heavy and mounted at a height, making it unlikely for a single person to steal it easily.
Raza also confirmed that the cameras connected to the stolen distribution box were inactive at the time of the theft, limiting surveillance in the area.
