PM tasks Speaker Sadiq with building consensus on 27th Constitutional Amendment
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has tasked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq with building consensus among political parties over the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, sources said on Wednesday.
In this regard, Speaker Sadiq has convened a meeting of all parliamentary party leaders today (Wednesday) at 4pm in the Speaker’s Lounge of the Parliament House to discuss the proposed amendment.
Invitations have also been extended to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), while chief whips and parliamentary leaders of allied parties have also been asked to attend the session.
During the meeting, participants will be briefed on the contours of the proposed constitutional amendment and the government’s strategy for its passage.
The sources said the Speaker will urge all parties to support the amendment in parliament.
The Speaker is also expected to hold separate meetings with parliamentary leaders in his chamber to secure a consensus on the legislation.
The sources indicated that if political consensus is not achieved, the government may rely on its numerical strength in the National Assembly to push the amendment through.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has directed its lawmakers and those of allied parties to ensure their presence in Islamabad.
