Reckless driver kills newlywed Shahzaib; furious masses put dumper on fire
A newly-married man, Shahzaib, died, and his wife was injured when a speeding dumper hit their motorcycle on Karachi’s Nishter Road, leading to anger in the area as people set the dumper on fire and police detained the driver and three others.
According to police, the crash was severe, and 25-year-old Shahzaib’s face was badly damaged.
He lived in the Garden area, worked in the cloth business, and had married four months ago.
After the accident, residents came out on the road, protested, and set the dumper on fire. Fire brigade teams later put out the flames.
Shortly after, Dumper Association chief Liaqat Mehsood arrived at the scene with armed guards. People shouted slogans against him and demanded justice.
Witnesses said Mehsood’s guards fired in the air, causing panic, and then escaped.
Protesters later set another dumper on fire in Garden Ram Swami.
Liaqat Mehsood claimed later that he was attacked and announced a protest, saying the National Highway would be blocked.
Police arrested the dumper driver and three others and seized the vehicle.
Two FIRs were filed, one by Shahzaib’s father and another by social worker Abdul Qadir Memon.
The FIRs stated that Mehsood threatened citizens, his guards fired shots, and people were harassed and beaten. It also alleged that police sirens were used on Mehsud’s vehicles to scare the public.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori took notice and said that pointing guns at citizens or showing weapons in public would not be tolerated. He instructed the IGP to take strict action and assured Shahzaib’s family of justice.
Police confirmed that the search for the guard involved in the firing is still underway.
