Senior journalist Imtiaz Mir succumbs to his injuries following Malir assassination attempt
Senior journalist and private TV anchor Imtiaz Mir, who was critically injured in an assassination attempt a week ago in Karachi’s Malir area, has succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
According to police and family sources, armed assailants opened fire indiscriminately on Imtiaz Mir’s vehicle on the night of September 21 near the National Highway in Malir Kala Board. At the time, he was returning home from the office, and his older brother, Muhammad Saleh, was driving the car.
Suddenly, 6 attackers on two motorcycles appeared and targeted the vehicle, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds to Imtiaz Mir’s face and chest. He was rushed to Liaquat National Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night after a week of treatment.
His brother, Muhammad Saleh, also sustained minor injuries in the attack.
His other brother, Riaz Ali, who is also the complainant in this case, confirmed that Imtiaz Mir had passed away during treatment. SHO Atiq ur Rehman of Saudabad police station also confirmed the journalist’s death.
According to the police, a case has been registered against one person and his sons in connection with the attack, and initial investigations suggest that the incident stems from a land dispute in the Jacobabad tehsil of Thul.
Police stated that although a lesser-known militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, this assertion has been deemed unreliable.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow and regret over Imtiaz Mir’s passing and directed the IG of Sindh to ensure the swift arrest of the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The Chief Minister stated that the services of the late journalist will be remembered, and the government will ensure that the case is brought to a logical conclusion.
