Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has taken a landmark decision regarding Sindh’s fisheries sector by appointing a woman from a fishing family as chairperson of the Sindh Fisheries.

According to party sources, Bilawal directed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to appoint Fatima Majeed as Chairperson of the Sindh Fisheries department, marking a departure from the past when the coveted position was reportedly auctioned off for billions of rupees.

Fatima Majeed belongs to a traditional fishing household, and her nomination is being seen as a symbolic move to empower marginalised coastal communities, long deprived of representation in fisheries management.

The decision was conveyed during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House with representatives of coastal areas in attendance. Party insiders described the move as a blow to vested interests who sought to control the office for personal gain.

Observers note that the chairperson of the fisheries holds significant influence in Sindh’s coastal belt, making the post one of strategic and financial importance.

“This decision has crushed the dreams of profiteers,” a senior PPP source remarked, adding that it reflects Bilawal’s commitment to grassroots empowerment.
