NDMA issues nationwide alert for monsoon rains, possible floods
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert for heavy monsoon rains and potential flash floods over the next 24 to 48 hours.
An NDMA spokesperson also asked residents and local authorities to prepare for possible emergencies.
According to the NDMA spokesperson, intense downpours accompanied by strong winds are expected between June 26 and June 28 in several cities, including Islamabad, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur.
Punjab and Sindh at risk
Urban flooding is feared in key cities across Punjab, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, as well as in Sindh, particularly Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Nawabshah, and Larkana.
Heavy rain is also expected in Sukkur, Kashmore, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar, and Badin, with potential for local flooding and infrastructure damage.
KP, AJK and landslide threats
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strong rains may cause flash floods and landslides in hilly areas of Peshawar, Mardan, Mansehra, and Abbottabad.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, areas such as Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Rawalakot, Haveli, and Hattian Bala are also expected to receive torrential rainfall, with landslide risks in mountainous regions.
Gilgit-Baltistan alert
A separate three-day alert (June 26–29) has been issued for Gilgit-Baltistan, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar.
Rising water levels in local rivers such as the Hunza, Khunjerab, Khilik, Chapursan, and Shamshal Braldo may lead to flooding in adjacent areas.
Tourist hotspots like Khudaabad, Karimabad, Nagar, and Gulmit are particularly vulnerable, with authorities warning of possible infrastructure damage and travel disruptions.
Public advisory
The NDMA has urged the public to avoid travel to high-risk or flood-prone areas, stay away from weak structures, power lines, and billboards during storms and refrain from crossing streams or nullahs during heavy rainfall.
It also asked people to relocate livestock and valuables to safer ground and stay updated using the NDMA’s official disaster alert mobile app.
All provincial and district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure emergency preparedness for any potential disaster.
