In the wake of a recent military strike by India, Pakistan is now facing an elevated threat of cyberattacks. Responding to these concerns, the National Cyber Emergency Response Team has released an urgent advisory warning of potential cyber threats targeting the country’s critical digital infrastructure.

The advisory highlights that hostile actors are leveraging the current geopolitical tensions to launch cyber offensives aimed at disrupting key networks.

It further cautions that misinformation campaigns are being waged through phishing schemes, fake messages, and fabricated news stories to mislead the public and create chaos.

Citizens are urged not to circulate unverified reports or rumors related to cyber incidents on social media platforms, as such actions may amplify the impact of malicious campaigns.

Officials stress that modern conflict is not confined to traditional battlefields. Cyber warfare now plays a significant role in national security, with adversarial forces attempting to breach systems, steal sensitive data, and destabilize institutions via the internet.

Cyberattacks typically involve hackers deploying malware, viruses, or deceptive content to compromise devices and access personal or official information. Such attacks often target financial data, government websites, and social media accounts, and can spread disinformation widely.

Public at risk from digital threats

Unsecured mobile phones and computers can leave individuals vulnerable to financial theft, identity misuse, and the leakage of private information. Hackers may also exploit personal data to launch further attacks.

Advisory recommends precautionary measures

The cyber advisory outlines several steps for citizens to safeguard themselves:

  1. Use complex passwords incorporating letters, numbers, and special characters.

  2. Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links in emails or messages.

  3. Regularly update antivirus software and all digital systems.

  4. Refrain from sharing sensitive personal information on social media.

  5. Exercise caution when using public Wi-Fi, especially for financial transactions.

  6. Enable two-factor authentication for added security on key accounts.

  7. Keep all applications and operating systems updated to close security gaps.
