Sri Lanka set Pakistan 289-run target in second ODI
Sri Lanka posted 288 for eight in the second One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan on Friday, setting a 289-run target after a steady top-order effort and late-innings acceleration at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Sent in to bat, Sri Lanka’s openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara put on a 51-run stand before Pakistan claimed their first breakthrough through a sharp run-out engineered by Naseem Shah and finished by Mohammad Rizwan.
Mishara departed soon after for 27, stumped off Abrar Ahmed to leave Sri Lanka at 62 for two.
Abrar then struck twice in quick succession, removing Kusal Mendis for 20 and skipper Charith Asalanka for six, reducing the visitors to 98 for four.
Sadeera Samarawickrama and Janith Liyanage rebuilt with a 61-run partnership before Haris Rauf bowled Samarawickrama for 42.
Liyanage reached a composed 54 before falling to Mohammad Wasim Jr, while Kamindu Mendis added 44 in a 73-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Rauf returned to dismiss Mendis and Dushmantha Chameera, finishing with three wickets alongside Abrar’s three.
At 244 for eight, Sri Lanka looked set to fall short of a competitive total, but Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan added an unbeaten 44 for the ninth wicket.
Hasaranga struck 37 off 26 deliveries, lifting the innings to 288.
Pakistan made two changes, bringing in Abrar and Wasim Jr for Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf. Shaheen missed the match due to illness, with Salman Ali Agha leading the side.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to field.
Pakistan lead the three-match series 1–0 after a six-run win in the opening ODI.
