Karachi University student dies after being hit by campus bus

The victim was a social work student; VC promises transparent probe as students protest over safety lapses

A female student of the University of Karachi died on Friday after being hit by a university bus, prompting protests by students and a promise of an inquiry from the administration.

According to police, the tragic incident occurred when Aniqa Saeed, a second-year student of the Department of Social Work, was struck while disembarking from the bus. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Following the incident, students gathered on campus to stage a protest, demanding stricter safety measures and calling for a suspension of all university buses until an investigation is completed.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi met with the protesting students and expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

“We accept responsibility and assure a transparent investigation into the matter,” he said, adding that the university administration would reassess and enforce new speed limits for all campus buses to prevent future tragedies.

Police officials said the bus driver had been taken into custody, while the victim’s family declined to pursue legal action, insisting on taking custody of the body without filing a case.
